The Galway Races Lyrics – The Wolfe Tones

The Galway Races Lyrics by The Wolfe Tones

As I rode down to Galway Town to seek for recreation
On the twenty-fifth of August my mind was elevated
For multitudes assemble with their tickets at the station
Me eyes began to dazzle as I goin’ to see the races

With me wack fol the do fol the diddly-idle-day
There were multitudes from Aran and were thousands there from Clifton
The boys from Connemara and the Clare unmarried ladies
Were pеople from Cork City who were loyal, truе and faithful

They brought home the Fenian prisoners from dyin’ in foreign nations
With me wack fol the do fol the diddly-idle-day
The tents are in rotation in the middle of the course
With a distilled combination, boys, this can produce

And a landlady inside with her bottle and her water
She multiplyin’ the whiskey lest the boozer should run shorter
With me wack fol the do fol the diddly-idle-day
This day you’ll see the pipers and the fiddlers competin’

The nimble-footed dancers and they trippin’ on the daisies
And they call for whiskey freely and they pay before they go
And a tiddle of girls among the crowd and a row was never known
This day you’ll see confectioners with sugar sticks and cakes

To accomodate the ladies and some other privateers
And the gingerbread and lozenges and lemonade and raisins
The pig’s foot for thruppence to be chewin’ while you’re able
With me wack fol the do fol the diddly-idle-day

This day you’ll see the long man with the firing at the hoop
And the men with the long gaiters that they call ‘the trick of the loop’
And the timbermen so nimble with their fingers full of sparkle
They spin that wheel of fortune its four and twenty quarters

With me wack fol the do fol the diddly-idle-day
This day you’ll see the jockeys and they dressed in blue and green
And looked around the horses most commodious to be seen
And the bugles sounds for startin’ and the people shout for joy

And a bettin’ tent to win the pound the horse that wins the prize
With me wack fol the do fol the diddly-idle-day
Oh now me coat is dry, boys, I’m into win me song
Success attend the sportly king since races first begun

And I drink to all the places and I’ve ne’er seen all the races
But I’m sure that I’ll return again to see the Galway Races
With me wack fol the do fol the diddly-idle-day
